People witnessed massive extraction of coal along with the significant invention of the steam engine that created a new type of energy that later on helped speed up the manufacturing of railroads, thus accelerating the economy.
- The Second Industrial Revolution (1870): This revolution started at the end of the 19th century, with massive technological advancements in industries that helped the emergence of a new source of energy—electricity, gas, and oil. This revolution resulted in the creation of the internal combustion engine, which started to reach its full potential. Other important points of this revolution were the development of steel demand, chemical synthesis, and methods of communication such as the telegraph and the telephone. Finally, the inventions of the automobile and the plane at the beginning of the 20th century are why this revolution is considered one of the most important1.
- The Third Industrial Revolution (1969): In the second half of the 20th century, we see another source of untapped energy emerge: nuclear energy! The third revolution brought forth the rise of electronics, telecommunications, and, of course, computers. It opened doors to space expeditions, research, and biotechnology through new technologies. In industries, two major inventions, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Robots, helped give rise to an era of high-level automation1.
- Industry 4.0: For many people, Industry 4.0 is considered The Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is a revolution happening now that focuses on helping people take advantage of digital marvels during their everyday lives. From digital flipbooks to augmented reality gaming, Industry 4.0 is shaping our world.
- Industry 5.0: Industry 5.0 is all about bringing the human touch back into the equation. While Industry 4.0 focuses on the use of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things and big data, Industry 5.0 aims to integrate human, environmental, and social aspects into the mix. This means that robots and smart machines will work alongside people, with a focus on resilience and sustainability. It’s a new era of collaboration and harmony between man and machine.
